DPT The Vaccine

DPT, (sometimes DTP) is a mixture of three vaccines to immunize against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus (lock jaw)
DTP vaccine may be distinguished as "DTwP" and "DTaP", with "wP" referring to "whole cell pertussis" and "aP" referring to "acellular pertussis". (The acellular form is considered safer and contains far fewer antigens than the older preparation.) Current versions of DTP in Europe do not contain preservatives; older ones contained thimerosal.

The Diseases
Diphtheria

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads easily and occurs quickly. It mainly affects the nose and throat. Children under 5 and adults over 60 years old are particularly at risk for contracting the infection. People living in crowded or unclean conditions, those who aren't well nourished.
Diphtheria is rare in the United States and Europe, where health officials have been immunizing children against it for decades. However, it's still common in developing countries where immunizations aren't given routinely. In 1993 and 1994, more than 50,000 cases were reported during a serious outbreak of diphtheria in countries of the former Soviet Union.
Diphtheria can lead to death.

Pertussis (whooping cough).

An infection of the respiratory system caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis (or B. pertussis). It's characterized by severe coughing spells that end in a "whooping" sound when the person breathes in. Before a vaccine was available, pertussis killed 5,000 to 10,000 people in the United States each year. Now, the pertussis vaccine has reduced the annual number of deaths to less than 30.
But in recent years, the number of cases has started to rise. By 2004, the number of whooping cough cases spiked past 25,000, the highest level it's been since the 1950s. It's mainly affected infants who are younger than 6 months old before they are adequately protected by their immunizations, and kids who are 11 to 18 years old whose immunity has faded.
Although whooping cough can occur at any age, it's most severe in unimmunized children and in infants under 1 year of age (early immunization can usually prevent this serious disease in babies). But more cases have been reported in teens and adults, because their immunity has faded since their original vaccination. That's why the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently recommended that kids who are 11-18 years old get a booster shot that includes a pertussis vaccine, preferably when they are 11 to 12 years old.
Children who are vaccinated can still get whooping cough, however symptoms are less severe.

Tetanus (lock jaw).

 Tetanus [TET-nus] is a condition that affects the nervous system and causes painful, uncontrolled muscle spasms.
People get tetanus when spores of the tetanus bacteria enter the body through an open wound and produce a powerful nerve poison.
Tetanus spores are found throughout the environment, usually in soil, dust, and animal waste.
Tetanus is preventable through immunization. Because of widespread use of tetanus vaccine, the condition is now rare.

Adverse Reactions

As with every vaccine DPT has risks. Of course the majority of children have no side effects and go on to become healthy adults, for a few however all does not go well.
The DPT vaccine has been the subject of controversy for many years. DPT has in some cases been proven to have caused severe brain damage and even death.
It is only now that papers locked away for 30years are being released under FOI act and the true extent of what has been covered up is now for the first time being read.

These papers show that Professor Gordon Stewart spoke about his concerns as early as the 1970’s. He was the Professor of Public Health at Glasgow University and became concerned when a number of cases of children having convulsions, white attacks and some children dying after DPT vaccine were reported to him. He made several attempts to alert the Government and Dept of Health up until the 1980’s. He felt that the problems arose from the Pertussis element of the vaccine, although it may have been also linked we know now to Thimerosal being used as the preservative in the vaccine.
Another person very concerned was Rosemary Fox, who in the early 1970’s, herself being the mother of a vaccine damaged child formed a parents action group called the Association of Parents of Vaccine Damaged Children. She campaigned over many years for the rights of the families affected. She wrote a report to the European Courts of Human Rights to try to get a compensation scheme set up in Great Britain for the vaccine damaged children and their families. Her efforts were not in vain and finally MP Jack Astley brought the debate to Parliament in January 1974, and for the next three years it continued to rage before finally, in 1978, the Government agreed to pay all affected children £10,000.
