Dr Wakefield’s work along with his findings were published in the Lancet, detailing his study and subsequent results . Unfortunately this resulted in an MMR scare which led some parents alternately giving their children individual jabs, or in some cases not vaccinating them at all, and led to the uptake of the jab falling to 82 per cent in 2002/03 from around 92 per cent in 1995/96.Since that article was published the GMC have decided to investigate Dr Wakefield for ‘Fitness to Practise’, as they say there were flaws in the study.The GMC have drawn up preliminary charges that Dr Wakefield published "inadequately founded" research, failed to obtain ethical committee approval, obtained funding "improperly" and subjected children to "unnecessary and invasive investigations".In 2002, Dr Richard Horton, the editor of The Lancet, said Dr Wakefield's findings were "entirely flawed" and admitted the research should never have been published because it represented a "fatal conflict of interest".Read below the written statements from Dr Wakefield and all that were on this study.Lancet - Statements by all on Dr Wakefield's study |
