I read with interest the article on the controversy surrounding the vaccine oversight of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Thank you for not making this a debate just between parents and the medical community.
I did want to address some of your information.
"Up until 2000, mercury-based thimerosal was used in all childhood vaccines as a preservative."
That date of 2000 may have come from the CDC, but it's clearly false. Many vaccines had a shelf life well beyond 2000, and there are still pediatric vaccines with mercury being supplied to doctors.

And today we have ninety percent of the flu vaccine which is recommended for the most vulnerable people in society with unconscionable levels of mercury. A child from 6 months to age three receiving a flu vaccine gets 12.5 mcg of mercury. This amount of mercury can be processed only by someone weighing 275 pounds according to the EPA. One month later, another 12.5 booster is recommended. Older children receive the adult vaccine with 25 mcg of mercury. That much mercury is meant for someone weighing 550 pounds according to the EPA. The 25 mcg vaccine is also recommended for pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy. This massive mercury assault easily passes the placental barrier and enters the developing fetus whose tiny brain is just forming.

The science is overwhelming against the use of mercury in vaccines, but we never hear about any of the real research and we never seem to focus on the fact that the autism rate exploded from one in 10,000 to one in every 166 children in the U.S., at time the number of mercury-containing vaccines in the childhood schedule was dramatically increased.
The federal health agencies defend the use of mercury and the press never seems to consider that they may have a lot at stake in denying any link, since they approved, mandated, and vigorously promoted vaccines with mercury. Can anyone imagine that they'd admit they never added up the mercury totals?
We are in the midst of an autism epidemic affecting one in every 166 children and the CDC has spent the last few years ignoring it. Their favorite explanation for the dramatic increase in autism is to attribute it all to "better diagnosing and greater awareness" on the part of doctors and educators.
Fox News tells us that the "Institutes of Medicine, contracted by the CDC to study the possible linkage, released findings in 2004 that found no connection. That study is still used by the agency today as the official position on the issue."
It is almost laughable to think that under the direction of the CDC, the IOM would have found a link. Fox News is in reality giving the CDC oversight over itself. I hardly think Fox News would accept a study done by the tobacco industry on smoking and lung cancer without noting the bias.

If Fox News actually investigated this, they'd easily find that PUBLICLY the CDC denies a link, but privately they've known for years ad so have the vaccine makers. This is the subject never covered by the media, but more and more parents and experts know the truth about the mercury-based vaccine preservative thimerosal.
Thimerosal goes back 75 years. It was invented and tested Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company in 1930. The one study done on thimerosal was done by Eli Lilly on 22 adult patients suffering from meningitis. There was no chance for follow-up to observe long-term effects, as all of the patients died. Even if follow-up had been possible, damage to the developing brains of very young children would have remained an unknown. Eli Lilly said it was safe and the medical community just accepted it. After the creation of the FDA, its use was simply continued. The FDA has never tested thimerosal for toxicity. This is a horrendous oversight failure and calls any safety claim into question.
In recent years the CDC has only managed to provide the public with easily flawed and manipulated population studies, like the IOM study, to attempt to show thimerosal isn't linked to autism. They've successfully ignored the volumes of research findings on the deadly effects of thimerosal. Dr. Boyd Haley, University of Kentucky; Dr. Mady Hornig, Columbia University, Dr. Thomas Burbacher, University of Washington; Dr. Mark Geier, President of The Genetic Centers of America and David Geier, Vice President of The Institute of Chronic Illnesses, and Dr. Jill James, University of Arkansas are just a handful of the well-credentialed scientists whose work links thimerosal to neurological damage in our children.

The CDC has long been aware of the damage that's been done and has sought to cover it up. So have the vaccine makers. In his book, Evidence of Harm, journalist David Kirby points out that "...many researchers had sent the company [Eli Lilly] documents dating back to the 1930's, each raising a red flag about thimerosal." Mr. Kirby chronologically lists over 70 years of scientific research on the damaging and deadly effects of thimerosal that was willfully ignored by Eli Lilly and the CDC .http://www.evidenceofharm.com/
In 1991, Dr. Maurice Hilleman, one of the top vaccinologists in the world, wrote a memo to the president of Merck Pharmaceutical Co. warning about the high mercury levels children were receiving in their vaccines. That warning was ignored and mercury exposure was only increased with additional vaccines.

Through the Freedom of Information Act, records of a meeting held in June of 2000 have been obtained. Fifty-three scientists from the CDC, FDA, ACIP and representatives from the pharmaceutical companies met at a secluded retreat center called Simpsonwood in Norcross, GA to review the findings of Dr. Thomas Verstraten, an epidemiologist hired by CDC to review data from the Vaccine Safety Datalink. Dr. Verstraten found a "statistically significant connection" between thimerosal and tics, verbal delays and ADHD/ADD and autism. One of the attendees, Dr. Robert Brent stated "So we are in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits if they were initiated and I am concerned." That was six years ago but officials have continued to deny any knowledge of a link between vaccines and the soaring autism rate.

The CDC is fully aware of how incriminating the information in that Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) is and they've worked to prevent outside experts from examining the records of vaccine side-effects. CDC has closed the VSD to scientists, and has persistently defied federal law, congressional demands and appeals from the scientific community to open it.

In a country where we hear about the danger from the environmental mercury released out of coal-fueled power plants contaminating the fish in our rivers and lakes, where pregnant women are warned against eating fish because of the possible neurological damage to their unborn children, it seems that the second deadliest element on Earth is still safe to inject directly into babies. Despite the fact that one in every 166 children is diagnosed with autism and one in every six schoolchildren has a learning disorder like attention deficit , we continue to expose children to deadly mercury in the flu vaccine and pretend that all the autism couldn't possibly be linked to the unconscionable use of mercury.
This is a health care disaster that will only get worse. Fox News tells us that "Congress was too busy wrestling with a host of issues, including the war on terror, high gas prices and appropriations bills to turn its attention toward the health issue before it recessed on Sept. 29," and it's "unlikely to touch on any legislation relating to the matter" when it returns in Nov.
During the polio epidemic in the 1950's, polio affected one in 3,000 Americans. That was a national crisis and it got everyone's attention. Autism affects one in every 166 children, and Congress is too busy to address it. The difference that should be noted is that even though some Americans died with polio, most recovered to go on to independent, productive lives. The same won't be said about the one in 166 with autism. Congress may be too busy to care about autism before the Nov. elections, but the day is fast approaching when one in every 166 eighteen year olds will be going on disability for life with autism. This disabled generation will be drawing on Social Security at the very same time the vast majority of the baby boomers are retiring.
I wonder if Congress will be able to make time to look into autism when that happens?
The CDC announced this past summer that there are 300,000 people with autism under the age of eighteen in the U.S. A Harvard study puts the cost for a lifetime of care for one autistic person at 3.2 million dollars. Other research shows that to be a gross underestimate. We will never be able to pay for this generation of disabled adults. A school superintendent in one article described the increase in autistic special needs students as a "train wreck coming." The prospect of all these autistic adults on disability looms like a tsunami.
The words of Laura Bono of the National Autism Association should be sounding an alarm. She recently said,
"As those children reach adulthood, the U.S. is ill-equipped to care for them. Not only do we not have enough services for adults now, the light at the end of the tunnel is a train. Frankly, we don't know what we're going to do."
