MMR the Vaccine

Vaccine - MMR; Rubella vaccination; Mumps vaccination; Measles - mumps - rubella (MMR) vaccine

The MMR vaccine is a "3-in-1" vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella -- all of which are potentially serious diseases of childhood.
The MMR is one of the recommended childhood immunizations.

SCHEDULE

• The first shot is recommended when the child is 12- to 15-months-old

• A second MMR is recommended before entering school at 4-6 years (but can be given at any time thereafter)

BENEFITS

One MMR will protect most individuals from contracting measles, mumps, or rubella throughout their lives. The second MMR is recommended to cover those individuals who may not have received adequate protection from the first MMR.

The Diseases
Measles

Measles, also called rubeola, is a highly contagious - but rare - respiratory infection that's caused by a virus. It causes a total-body skin rash and flu-like symptoms, including a fever, cough, and runny nose.
Possible complications of Measles are.

• Ear infection which causes earache is a common complication.

• A febrile convulsion (fit) occurs in about 1 in 200 cases. This can be alarming, but full recovery is usual.

• Infections of the airways such as bronchitis and croup are common. These are distressing, but are not usually serious.

• Pneumonia (lung infection) is a serious complication that sometimes develops. Typical symptoms include fast or difficult breathing, chest pains, and generally becoming more ill.

• Brain inflammation (encephalitis) is a rare but very serious complication. It occurs in about 1 in 5000 cases. It typically causes drowsiness, headache, and vomiting which starts about 7-10 days after the onset of the rash. Encephalitis may cause brain damage. Some children die from this complication.

• Squint is thought to be more common than usual in children who have had measles. The virus may affect the nerve or muscles to the eye.

• A very rare brain disease called sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis develops years later in a small number of people who have had measles.

Mumps

Mumps is a virus infection which typically causes enlargement of the two salivary glands in the cheeks at the angle of the jaw. This gives an appearance rather like a hamster with food in its cheeks.
Possible complications of Mumps
Swollen and painful testicles, Deafness, Pancreatitis, Meningitis, Encaphalitis.

Rubella

Sometimes rubella is known as German measles, but the word "German" in the name of this disease has nothing to do with the country. The name likely comes from the Latin term "germanus" meaning "similar." And indeed, rubella and measles (rubeola) share some characteristics, but they're caused by different viruses.
Rubella and measles are both contagious viral infections best known by the distinctive red rash that may appear on the skin of those who contract either illness. However, rubella is neither as infectious nor usually as severe as measles, which is why rubella is also called three-day measles. There is one important exception: If a pregnant woman contracts rubella, especially during her first trimester, the virus can cause death or serious birth defects in the developing fetus.

Possible complications of Rubella

Rubella is a mild infection. Once you've had the disease, you're usually permanently immune. In rare cases, rubella can cause an ear infection (otitis media) or inflammation of the brain (encephalitis).
However, if you're pregnant when you contract rubella, the consequences for your unborn child may be severe. Up to 90 percent of infants born to mothers who had rubella during the first 11 weeks of pregnancy develop congenital rubella syndrome. This can cause one or more problems, including growth retardation, cataracts, deafness, congenital heart defects and defects in other organs. The highest risk to the fetus is during the first trimester, but exposure later in pregnancy also is dangerous.

Possible adverse reactions to MMR.

As with all vaccinations the majority of children vaccinated go on to lead healthy lives  however as with all vaccinations some children do suffer adverse reactions. These can range in severity from redness on site of vaccine to death.
Over recent years there have been many reports of MMR being linked to Autism, ADHD and other neurological disorders. The MMR vaccination has also been linked to bowel disease. There has been a worrying increase in the number of children now being diagnosed as Autistic. The prevalence of Autism being reported to be as many as 1 in 150 children.This has yet to be scientifically proven but there does appear to be overwhelming reports of children becoming Autistic after receiving the MMR vaccination. Many studies that have been carried out have been ignored especially if the results lean to the vaccination causing an increase in Autism.
