Shaken Baby syndrome.
What Is SBS?SBS is a form of in head trauma, often diagnosed as child abuse as it can be caused by direct blows to the head, dropping or shaking the child. Head trauma is the leading cause of death in child abuse cases in the United States.The vast majority of incidents occur in infants who are younger than 1 year old. The average age of victims is between 3 and 8 months, although SBS is occasionally seen in children up to 4 years old.In child abuse cases the perpetrators in SBS are almost always parents or caregivers, who shake the baby out of frustration or stress when the little one is crying inconsolably.Sometimes SBS is diagnosed as being the cause of brain damage or death in an infant when the childs injuries mimic the injuries seen in true SBS cases. There have been cases reported in the media in recent years where parents have been falsely accused of SBS sometimes being diagnosed as having Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.False accusations and SBSShaken Baby Syndrome has been linked to the toxin Mercury in
